A solar photovoltaic panel comprises multiple layers of semiconductor material, typically silicon. When sunlight illuminates the material, it generates an electric current.

Notably, solar panels don't rely on direct sunlight, as they can generate electricity even during winter months and on overcast days. The panel's electricity production is contingent on the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) light, or sunshine.

Solar radiation, a form of electromagnetic radiation, emanates from the sun. Every location on Earth experiences varying levels of sunlight throughout the year, with differences based on geographical location. Certain regions receive higher solar radiation than others. Solar photovoltaic panels absorb this solar radiation and convert it into usable energy.

How does Solar PV work?

The solar inverter serves as the central intelligence of the PV system. Its primary function is to invert electricity, as implied by its name. The electricity generated by photovoltaic panels on a roof or ground-based system is in the form of DC, or direct current. However, DC current is not suitable for supplying energy to home appliances or equipment.

This underscores the essential role of the inverter. A solar inverter transforms the DC current into AC, or alternating current, making it compatible with residential usage. The converted AC current can then be seamlessly integrated into a property, providing power for appliances, equipment, and various other needs.

The solar panels on the roof or ground system generate direct current (DC) power.

The DC current from the solar panels is transmitted to the inverter through a DC cable.

The inverter of the system converts DC current into ready-to-use AC current.

Now, solar power can be utilized within the household, with any surplus either stored in a battery or fed into the grid.
